Error
Killer is not one of the most
famous of registry cleaners currently
available, and yet it does have a strong
following of those computer users who
make use of it. When reading reviews you
will often see that people ask you to
look beyond the basic nature of the
product and to focus on the results
achieved. This is of course something
that we have always said as well, there
is more to registry cleaners than looks,
and we decided to look at the
effectiveness of Error Killer.
Our
Overall Score – 85%
The Details of Error Killer
• Software Designer
– Error Killer is another stand
alone product, and little information can be
found out about the software developers, and
although this is not necessarily a bad thing,
it is often a comfort to know that the company
behind a product is experienced.
•
Compatibility
–Error Killer has been
designed to work on Windows 98, ME, 2000,
XP, XP Pro and Vista.
•
Features and Functions
– We normally like to see
registry cleaners offering additional features
to add value to their products, at the same
time though they must be relevant, and we have
found an increasing number of companies
offering features that are easily available
from other sources, including the Windows
operating system already installed on a
machine.
•
Back-up and
Undo – We were pleased
to see that as with all good
registry cleaners, Error Killer
has ensured that there is a
complete backup and restore
feature. This is an essential
comfort feature ensuring that
the registry can be restored if
any issues occur.
•
Start-up Manager – Error
Killer offers up a start-up manager
so that a user can choose the
programs that start up during a
computer boot. Limiting the number
can help with the start up speed
but is not a groundbreaking feature
in itself.
•
Add/Remove Programs
– Another feature that is
useful but can be found within the
Windows operating system is the
add/remove programs feature. It is
a good idea to keep track of
programs installed on a computer,
as it will help with the operating
speed, but computer users can do
this for themselves easily
enough. |
The Test Results
Error Killer offers potential
users a free test, a scanning tool that will
look through their computer for errors and tell
the user what has been found. To be able to
easily rectify identified errors though it is
necessary to purchase and install the full
version of the registry cleaner from the
company’s website. This was what we did,
installing Error Killer onto our test machine.
The scan proved to be one of the quickest we
have experienced, and the results of the scan
also appeared to be some of the most thorough
identify all of the known errors. These results
made us confident that Error Killer had
searched through the entire contents of the
Windows registry. The repair process was quick
and easy and was completed with a couple of
clicks of our mouse.
We then sought to see just how much the
registry cleaner had improved our test machine,
and so with a restart of our machine, we
quickly found that we were now the owners of a
much faster start-up computer, and the
operating speeds also seemed to be much
improved.
Additional
Observations
Although Error Killer does include
more features than other basic registry
cleaners, they are nothing special, and the
likes of program managers and start-up managers
are easily available from other sources, indeed
some of the features are even included within
the Windows operating system. Whilst Error
Killer does have the essential back-up and
restore feature, we would have preferred to see
a defrag and compression tool included to add
value on top of the basic registry cleaning
function.
Overall Impressions
Although let down by the included features,
Error Killer does in essence
do exactly what you would need from a registry
cleaner, and the scan and repair process was
some of the most effective that we have tested
so far. As a result of the cleaning process we
have awarded Error Killer one of our highest
scores, and although beaten by RegCure from
ParetoLogic it does come in our top five
registry cleaners currently
available.
